Q: is this 3rd gen like the red version?

It's appears to be a new version (1st gen) of the original one that is red; this version offers more security. From the PortaPow website as of 02/03/2020: Our Pure Data Blocker not only protects your devices from viruses and hacking from an unknown USB socket while they are being charged, but also features fully transparent casing and zero electronic components inside so you can be sure the blocker itself is secure. It is also made with a 25% lighter polycarbonate compound to be more environmentally friendly. Simply connect the data blocker in between your charging cable and the USB socket when you need to charge your phone, tablet, satnav or other device and you can be sure that only power and no data is flowing between the two. Limitations – 1) Since the pure data blocker has a zero-chip design principle, it doesn’t have the SmartCharge chip featured in our 3rd Gen design. This means charging speed may be slower with some combinations of device and charger. 2) The blocker is not compatible with extra fast charging technologies such as ‘Qualcomm Quick Charge’ ‘Samsung adaptive fast charge’ as these require data transfer to be enabled. Public USB chargers do not support these standards either so your device will charge as normal. 3) Some car USB sockets do not provide enough power to charge a device, so a dedicated USB car charger must be used.

Q: What is the max power throughput rating of this adapter?

I believe that this gadget will handle any power that comes from the power cube/adapter. It is basically an adapter with two wires which allows the current to run through (but no wires for data). It is useful when you use a public usb outlet such as in a coffee shop, airport or the usb outlet found at the base of the lamps in many hotels. If you are in a country where you are concerns about ‘state sponsored’ security issues, place this between your own power adapter and charging cable . One cannot be too paranoid, sometimes. :)

Q: is this the 3rd generation?

There is nothing on the device, packaging or instructions that indicates what gen it is. It does read, “For a list of all the improvements or to get in touch visit us at PortalPow.co.uk.” Hope this is helpful.
